Air Serbia's Business Class Experience: A Mixed Bag
I recently took a trip from Belgrade to Rome with Air Serbia, and it was a mixed bag of experiences. While the flight itself was uneventful and even ahead of schedule, the ground handling and overall cabin experience left something to be desired.
The Flight Itself
I booked the flight in business class using Etihad Guest miles, anticipating the new frequent flyer program. The flight was uneventful, with a good selection of food and drinks, and the crew was friendly and proactive. The meal selection was impressive for a short flight, and the crew offered additional drinks and even Plazma cookies, a treat typically reserved for economy class.
However, the cabin itself is showing its age. The seats look worn and tired, which is a concern for a carrier aiming to compete in the business class market. Despite this, the crew's service was commendable, and they deserve recognition for their efforts.
Ground Handling Issues
The real letdown was the ground handling in Rome. The airport staff's attitude was unprofessional and unhelpful. When we arrived early, there were no buses available, and the ground staff's response was dismissive. The lady crew member's announcement over the PA was a step in the right direction, but it didn't make up for the delay.
The passport control process was a nightmare. The police officers were chatting and socializing, ignoring their duties. This led to a slow-moving line, with passengers waiting for an extended period. The officer I encountered took my passport, glanced at it, and then proceeded to watch a funny video on her phone with her colleague, all while holding my passport. This is a common issue in other airports, and it's a major concern for passenger experience.
Implications and Recommendations
Air Serbia's business class offering is a strong point, but the cabin's wear and tear and the ground handling issues in Rome are a cause for concern. The airline should consider investing in cabin refreshes to maintain a competitive edge. Additionally, addressing the ground handling issues is crucial to ensuring a seamless and positive passenger experience.
In my opinion, Air Serbia has the potential to be a top-tier carrier, but these issues need to be addressed promptly to ensure customer satisfaction and loyalty.
